Berry Tramel speaks out on evils of Message Boards

Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman has this provocative clip where he talks about the damage that message board posters have inflicted on the reputations of two Sooner football players.  To remedy this, Tramel calls for all decent people to stop frequenting message boards.

I understand his underlying concern, but I get the sense that his contempt extends beyond this situation and applies to the internet in general.

Message boards can be a great place and they can be an ugly realm too.  Dawgman.com is a website that I have contributed to for several years.  It is as well-run a website as you will find.  Yet, our message boards have been a contentious place in recent months– due largely to a fractured fan base that constantly spars over the topic of coach Tyrone Willingham.  Some people find criticism of Willingham to be hurtful or hate speech, but the root cause for that belief is a conversation for another day.

The best thing that message board administrators can do is insist that posters use their real names; then there would be so some semblance of accountability when someone spreads false and damaging rumors about other people.

As a side note, which goes without saying, is that the last thing we need is for government to get involved with this issue!

Cheerleader Preview: Oklahoma’s Stephani DeBrucque

Here Come the Sooners

Here Come the Sooners

The only thing hotter than the seat occupied by Washington’s Tyrone Willingham may be the Oklahoma Sooner cheerleading squad, as led by Stephani DeBrucque.  The junior-to-be and her cohorts will be rolling into Seattle in mid-September, as the nationally-ranked Sooners do battle with the Dawgs.  Sports Illustrated did a feature on Stephani one week last season (She was named Cheerleader of the Week).

Oklahoma Sooner website has preview of Washington game

The Sooners are apparently looking at their mid-September trip to Seattle as the team’s first test of the season.  Of course, by the time that game rolls around, Washington will have played both Oregon and BYU.  It should be an interesting matchup, and you can read more about it here in an article by LP Pannell on SoonerScoop.com.

The Washinton Huskies helped legitimize Southern Football

1926 Rose Bowl - Washington vs. Alabama
1926 Rose Bowl – Washington vs. Alabama

No, not by way of their 65-7 loss to Miami in 2001…  As a Washington Huskies historian of sorts, I have always held a fondness for the 1926 Rose Bowl and the UW’s two stars George Wilson and Elmer Tesreau.  I have also always wondered that if Wilson hadn’t gotten injured for nearly half of this game, the Huskies would have handily defeated the Crimson Tide.  Alas it wasn’t to be.  (Although legendary sportswriter Damon Runyan witnessed the game and later reported that Wilson was “as fine a player in this generation or any other.”    Click here to read the interesting column from the Bleacher Report that depicts how Alabama (led by Johnny Mack Brown) helped legitimize Southern football with their 20-19 triumph over the Huskies.

Q & A with Oregon’s Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly

Oregon opens their 2008 campaign by hosting the hated Washington Huskies on August 30th at Autzen Stadium.  Oregon won last year’s game at Husky Stadium in a laugher, 55-34.  Click here for the interview.  It’s a good read.

Is Seattle Having the worst Sports year Ever?

Jim Caple of ESPN’s Page 2 certainly extends his empathy to Seattle fans in his most recent column.  It sure has been difficult to watch all that has gone on.  The pirating of the SuperSonics devastated a lot of people in the region; however it hurt me much more to see the Huskies collapse against the likes of Arizona, Arizona State and UCLA.

Nevertheless, the overall Seattle sporting scene is dark right now.  (Sonics gone, Mariners terrible again, Huskies football floundering).  There’s a saying that goes “It’s always darkest before the dawn.”  There’s another one, too, written by writer George Higgins that went:  “It was darker than a carload of assholes.”

Here’s a link to Caple’s interesting column.

UW’s Juan Garcia gets nice write-up on Sunday Morning Quarterback

The Sunday Morning Quarterback website– with its great slogan “Second-guessing College Kids Under Extreme Duress Since 2005”– has this nice little write-up today on Center Juan Garcia.  As you may have heard, Juan’s progress from his Linsfrac injury suffered during spring ball is coming along suprisingly well.  at least in the football scheme of things, it would have been a tragedy had this injury denied Juan his senior year.  Click here to enjoy the article.
